The Department has well equipped intensive care units, where acute medical emergencies are admitted including Acute Myocardial Infraction cases. The quality of management is of high standards. For the last 20 years, more than 2000 cases of Acute Myocardial Infraction were admitted and nearly 200 cases were treated of thrombolysis with good results.

Physicians of the patients’ choice administer to the medical cases. Siemens whole body spiral C.T. Scan with Bone Densitome try and 3-D orthopantogram – only one of its kind in Mangalore was installed in 2002. Color Doppler and T.M.T. (Stress Test) units were also installed in 2002.

Department of Surgery and Gastro Enterology

City Hospital has a fully-fledged Department of Surgery and Gastro Enterology. Dr. Bhaskar Shetty, General Surgeon and Gastro Enterologist, is the main consultant who is behind the development of the department and does most of the General Surgery and Gastro enterological operations.

The department is equipped with almost everything a major hospital in the Metropolitan Cities of India has. Apart from routine diagnosis X-ray and most modern scanning machine, the department has latest Colono Scope and Pentax upper Gastro Intestinal Endoscopes for the investigation of diseases of the colon, oesophagus, stomach and duodenum and for the treatment of bleeding from oesophagus and stomach. The department has installed the Endoscopic Abdominal Surgery Unit (popularly known as “Key-Hole Surgery” or “Lap-Cholecystectomy” unit) supplied by the world famous surgical equipment company, Karl-Storz GmbH and Co of the West Nitrous Oxide Cyrosurgery unit which is used for painless surgery of Piles, Polyps, Fissures and also used for ENT and Gynaecological applications.

Every known major or minor surgical procedures are done in the department with excellent results thereby attracting the patients from Karwar in the North, Cochin in the South and Hassan, Chickmagalur, Shimoga and Coorg in the East.

Internal Cardiac Pacemaker implantation and closed cardiac surgery are regularly carried out.

Surgery department is complimented by super specialty services in Cardio thoracic, Neurosurgery, Urology and Plastic surgery.

In all, the City Hospital is fully equipped to meet any surgical problems with the best of man and machinery.

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology

Professor Dr. M. Sudhakar Shetty, who had extensive training in England for more than 4 years and is assisted by well-qualified staff, ably heads one of the finest departments in this part of the country.

Being one of the busiest trauma centers, it runs 24 hours a day; interlocking nails, ring fixator applications and state-of-the-art management of fractures is being undertaken. All types of joint replacement surgery, hip, knee, elbow and shoulder, and Arthroscopy surgery and spine surgery are done routinely. Backed up by good anesthesiology, physiotherapy and trauma intensive care units our orthopedic department is indeed a backbone of service.

The hospital is also a recognized centre for its DNB programme in Orthopedics.
